Aimée Laurentine Kanyana, 42, a native of Ngozi Province, was approved by the National Assembly this morning as the first woman and third person to hold the position of Burundian Ombudsman.
Aimee Laurentine Kanyana worked in Bujumbura as a deputy prosecutor. She was elected to the constitutional court in 2013 before being appointed as the Central Bank’s second vice-governor (BRB).
Minister of Justice from August 2015 to August 2020, Aimée Laurentine Kanyana, was appointed to President Evariste Ndayishimiye’s cabinet as Deputy Chief of Civil Cabinet.
Aimée Laurentine Kanyana, a Tutsi, replaces Edouard Nduwimana, a Kayanza native.
You will know that the functions of the Ombudsman, as laid out in Article 237 of Burundi Constitution, are to eceive and investigate complaints of managerial misdeeds and violations of civil rights made by public officers and make recommendations to the relevant authorities and Mediate between the public administration and citizens and the ministries and the administration and acts as watchdog by scrutinizing the operations of the administration. An Ombudsman is elected for a 6-year term.
