The 5th Summit of Leaders of the Least Developped Countries is taking place in Doha, Qatar. Among the attendance is Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and other leaders of the 46 most deprived countries composing the group of LDCs.
Even if no leader of the world’s major economies attended, LDCs leaders didn’t fail to hit out at “the way rich countries loot ressources of poor countries”. They also made a strong call to wealthy nations to follow through on their last year’s promise to provide $100 billion annually in funding least developed nations’ resilience to climate change brought on by wealthy nations’ industrialization.
Speaking in the conference, UN secretary General said that wealthy nations should provide at least $500 billion a year to help poor countries to boost economies and vital services.
The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, said that poor countries need more aid for development and combating climate change. He said, “Our countries do not ask for favors, what we want is that what the fulfillment of what powerful countries have pledged to do.”
In his intervention, President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi condemned unjust sanctions that are often taken unilaterally against LDCs, as was the case for #Burundi in 2015, and whose socio-economic consequences negatively and permanently impact the country.
