The Democratic Republic of Congo mourns the loss of ten of its citizens who tragically lost their lives in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, last Sunday.
The tragic incident occurred at the campus of the International University of Africa in Khartoum, and according to Foreign Affairs Minister Christophe Lutundula, the Congolese civilians were gunned down by the regular forces of Sudan.
Mr. Lutundula went on to express his dismay and pointed a finger of blame at the Sudanese Army for using lethal force against unarmed civilians. The Minister further stated that several other people sustained injuries in the attack, which was carried out by the regular army on an area occupied by civilian populations, including foreign nationals.
At this difficult time, the Congolese government has reached out to the Chargé d’Affaires of Sudan in DRC to express their deep regret and sadness over the loss of their citizens. They have also urged the Sudanese government to do everything possible to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and return the bodies of the deceased.
The incident comes at a time when Sudan is reeling from protracted fighting, which started seven weeks ago after a paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces, led by Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, sought to oust President Fattah Al Burhan from power. So far, the fighting has led to the loss of over 1,800 lives, leaving many families devastated.
